Nollywood actor, Odunlade Adekola, recently had an interview with Premium Times, where he opened up on why he went back to school.
The actor is reportedly presently in 500 level studying Business Administration at UNILAG.
Read excerpts below:
PT: Is it true that you are presently an undergraduate at the University of Lagos?
Odunlade: Yes I am presently in 500 Level at the University of Lagos studying Business Administration. As a student, I loved business studies and anything that pertains to leadership. That is why I am studying Business Administration. I am also of the opinion that when you study Business Administration, you can fit into any profession.
As we all know, if you have a lot of money and you do not know how to manage it, you would squander it in no time. If you are a doctor, heading a hospital, and you don’t know how to manage the hospital, the establishment can pack up. So, the knowledge of business administration is the key to the smooth running of any organisation. I already have a diploma from the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic.
PT: You are already a household name, why return to school?
Odunlade: I am a firm believer in knowledge acquisition so I always tell young actors, who want to enter our industry to get an education first. In fact, if you tell me you are interested in acting, I will ask you what you are doing presently. If you say you are currently in school, I will advise you to finish before you join the movie industry.
Even if you are learning a trade, make sure you are certified before you join the movie industry. If you are seeking to gain admission into the university, ensure you complete your studies first before you come into the movie industry.
If you fail to do so, once you become a famous actor, it will be difficult for you to go back to school. Education is very important in anything you do in life.

Top 10 Best Wake Up Helpful Tips For Graduate With 2.2 and Lower Grades

There are so many discrimination for 2.2 or lower graduate thereby frustrating them making them not to remain focus. The truth is that some of these(2.2 or lower) graduates are better than some first class graduates out there.
A lot of emphasis have been placed on the need for students to graduate with stellar grades. I will continue to advise same. It’s common knowledge that most big firms in Nigeria don’t recruit graduates with less than a 2.1. Many graduates with 2.2 or lower are not even given the chance to prove themselves, even though some of them may be better than some graduates with higher grades. This is exacerbated by the high unemployment rate in Nigeria.  It won’t be a shocking news to know that there are still a few organizations that aren’t even accepting corps members (before the recent policy on posting), graduate interns and contract staff with grades lower than 2.1.

But that truth remains that students will continue to graduate with such grades, whether we want it or not. Many finish with such grades for reasons that are entirely avoidable while others are caused by factors seemingly beyond their control. But whatever the reason, they still deserve to live a fulfilled and responsible life. A few have sought my advice as they appear confused after graduating with 2.2. or third class. I have therefore decided to provide some general tips that can help graduates with 2.2 and lower. This is based on personal observation and experiences of others, some of whom I know to have made remarkable successes despite their low grades. Adapt them to your peculiar situation.

Here Are Top 10 Best Wake Up Helpful Tips For Graduate With 2.2 and Lower Grades

1. Work on your mindset – This is the first step towards overcoming the challenge of having a low grade. Accept the reality that it is likely going to be tougher for you out there compared to other graduates and start preparing for it. Know that you will most likely have to prove yourself and work harder than others. Don’t sit and whine peevishly about how life has been unfair to you. Life itself is a challenge. Realize the challenges on time and brace up for it. Don’t waste precious time on regrets and don’t fall into the trap of inferiority complex.
2. Network – Let’s face the facts and not deceive ourselves. Graduating with a 2.2 means that chances of joining the one of the big companies as an entry level staff in Nigeria in an open recruitment process is lower than others with better grades. Very few companies give 2.2 graduates the even the slightest opportunity to prove themselves. It is therefore very essential for you to learn to network. Improve your interpersonal skills and hone your networking skills. From observation, more than 70% of the graduates I know that graduated with 2.2 or less in the last 5 years got their jobs through networking. Strengthen your networking skills. Go to conferences, professional associations, etc. Get reliable contacts and industry  informants. Polish your linkedin profile. Don’t ignore religious and ethnic gatherings too. Friends can also be very helpful.
3. Improve your communication skill and confidence – This cannot be overemphasized. Communication skills (speaking and writing) can greatly enhance your chances of getting a job. The difference between 2 equally smart graduates may boil down to the ability of one being to express himself more than the other. Communication and confidence go together. Confidence in speaking can even make falsehood appear true. Have you ever wondered why con artists are able to swindle people? They talk and write displaying great poise and confidence. This is not to say that you need to lie arrogantly to get a job. I’m simply reiterating the need for you to sell yourself suitably because no one else will. You stand a better chance if you can.
4. Go for a masters or professional certification as soon as possible- While a masters or certification will not entirely take away the drawback caused by having a 2.2, it might ameliorate the effect. Believe me, there is a big difference between a BSc (2.2) in Accounting and a BSc (2.2) in Accounting + ICAN certification. Same goes for a BSc (2.2) in electrical engineering and a BSc (2.2) electrical engineering + MSc (distinction) in software engineering. Some companies are willing to consider 2.2 backed with a masters degree. The last NNPC advert for entry level positions considered 2.2 but with Masters degree. Besides, one can pursue an academic career depending on how good your postgraduate results are. It is good to consider a good postgraduate programme
5. Learn new skills – Your skills can enhance your employability. Search for suitable skills that can complement your BSc degree or help you build a career for which you are interested. I have seen graduates learn programming, graphic designs,  web design, etc and making a whole lot of money from them. Some learn useful engineering softwares. Some are simply astounding when it comes to database management. Others have great marketing ability. Quite a few are good writers and bloggers. The list goes on and on.
6. Don’t be discouraged to start small – While it is not impossible that you land the big dream job in a top organization on your first trial, the chances may not be very high. Fortunately, the significance of grades diminish gradually as you acquire relevant job experience. Never  feel discouraged if you have to start from a humbling work background. You do need that relevant job experience. It may come from an internship or volunteer experience. It may be a frustrating one-man business. The pay may appear too little for your comfort. The employment may be on contract basis. It doesn’t matter. Squeeze out as much experience as you can. All those experiences from the so-called ‘dirty’ jobs can add significant weight to your resume in your next big job hunt.
7. Practice hard copy CV circulation – We all know that there are very few openly advertised vacancies that require 2.2. for entry level positions. You might wait endlessly as a 2.2 graduate if you are seeking only publicly advertised jobs. Common! Quit waiting! Clean up your CV and cover letter, and pursue the unadvertised jobs. Go for unsolicited job applications. You will be positively surprised by how much success you can achieve by that singular but potent act of dropping CV’s.
8. Get mentors – There is nothing more inspiring than seeing others  who have passed through the same struggles and have overcome. You should try and get one or two mentors that can share their experiences and guide you appropriately in your career pursuits.
9. Consider other available options – You may need to do some critical thinking about options that are open for you. In some cases, students finish with low grades because they chose the wrong course . And in such situations, it may be very difficult to compete against other motivated graduates of same or similar courses. Like a Nigerian adage says ‘ there is more than one route to the  marketplace’. Are there other career options available for you to delve into? Have you considered entrepreneurship, multi-level marketing, sales job, etc? Do you love fashion designing, estate management, information technology, etc? Are there ‘menial’ jobs you have handled in the past that can fetch you big money if you decide to go fully  into it – like maintenance jobs, food services, dry cleaning jobs, etc.
10. Exercise patience and pray – Don’t expect a sudden breakthrough immediately. If it happens, rejoice. If it does not, keep developing yourself. Exercise some patience and continue to work hard. I sincerely believe in the powers of miracle. We all need some elements of luck (some call it favour) in the labour market. That’s where the power of prayer comes

Breaking News: Senate Moves To Scrap Post-UTME (See Why)

ABUJA- THE Senate had begun moves to scrap the post Unified Matriculation Examination, UME as it yesterday mandated its committee on Tertiary Education to meet with relevant stakeholders, especially the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and come up with recommendations on how to achieve the set goal.
According to the Senate, the move has become imperative because the introduction of the post – UME examination has to a large extent failed to remedy the problems associated with the JAMB, adding that its continued existence has posed more challenges for the Nigeria educational system.
The Senate has also called for the development of a strategy that would ensure the efficiency and integrity in the conduct of JAMB examination.
The resolutions of the Senate Tuesday followed a motion by Senator Umaru l. Kurfi, APC, Katsina Central and entitled, “The Need to revisit the regulatory conflict between Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Universities in offering admission in Nigeria.”
In his presentation of the motion, Senator Umaru l. Kurfi said that “The Senate: Notes that the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) was established in 1976 and saddled with the responsibility of streamlining and co- ordinating admission practice as well as determining who is admitted into universities and other tertiary educational institutions in Nigeria;
“Further notes that that the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) is the Federal umbrella organization which oversees the administration of University education in Nigaria, and prior to 2005 , the truly criteria needed for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions was for such candidate to have minimum admission requirement and possess a certain score at his or her JAMB examination.
“Aware that the laudable objectives of JAMB began to suffer progressive denudation shortly after its inception as some universities admitted students outside the list sent by JAMB and rejecting candidates with admission letters from JAMB on the ground that they had to comply with their own internal quota and catchment calculation, coupled with the issue of malpractices that plagued JAMB examinations.
“Further aware as scores of successful JAMB candidates turned out ill equipped for university education, the Federal Government, in 2005, under the leadership of President Olusegun Obasanjo , introduced the policy of Post-UME screening by Universities which made it compulsory for tertiary institutions to screen candidates after JAMB results and before offering admission;
“Worried that while this new development was aimed at addressing the problem of student quality, it reintroduced and entrenched many of the problems it sought to eliminate through JAMB;
“Cognizance that while the executives introduced the Post-UME policy as a remedy to the decay in educational standard in higher institutions of learning, there have been public outcry of extortion from candidates despite the rigorous test they pass through at JAMB;
“Disturbed that as the integrity of the post -UME examination is open to question as the pecuniary motive of the respective institutions comes so visibly to the fore that there is little pretence about maximizing the income flows through these internal examinations;
“Regrets that the introduction of the post – UME examination has to a large extent failed to remedy the problems associated with the JAMB and as such, its continued existence has posed more challenges for the Nigeria educational system.”

About 21,780 out of 33,000 teachers failed the primary four test administered to test their competence by the Kaduna State government.
The state is therefore shopping for 25,000 new teachers as one of the plans to restore dignity and quality to education.
Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State unveiled the planned recruitment when he received a World Bank’s delegation in Kaduna on Monday.
“We tested our 33,000 primary school teachers, we gave them primary four examination and required they must get at least 75 per cent but I am sad to announce that 66 per cent of them failed to get the requirements
The hiring of teachers in the past was politicized and we intend to change that by bringing in young and qualified primary school teachers to restore the dignity of education in the state,” the governor said.
He stressed that teachers would be redeployed across the state to balance the issue of teacher-pupil ratio.
“We have a challenge with the teacher-pupil ratio in the urban schools; there is concentration of teachers that are not needed.
The governor said that in a bid to improve the education sector, the school Directors decided to enrol their children in public schools starting from this academic session.

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has denied rusticating one of its students for dancing. This is according to its spokesman, Toyin Adebule.
Recall that after a video of a student dancing with the statue of the late UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Babatunde Sofoluwe started trending, some social media users had alleged that she had been rusticated for 4 semesters over that.
The student who appeared in the video is said to be a law student. It is claimed that the video was taken about two months ago but only became public knowledge few days ago over the alleged incidence of rustication. The matter has so far attracted mixed reactions from social media users.
Adebule was emphatic that such an allegation was “false and should be disregarded” when contacted by EduCeleb on Monday.

He noted that while the university encourages good conduct among its students, there was no iota of truth in social media rumours that the lady who appeared in the video was rusticated for four semesters.

A corps member identifed as Psmielz, has narrated how he was assaulted by members of SARS Operatives after he refused to release his phone.
Psmielz, via instagram, shared the traumatic experience he had with the security operatives.
He wrote;
“I had double encounters with SARS at Sango Toll Gate. They stopped the cab I was in and asked me to alight from the vehicle.
.
I got down and showed them my NYSC ID card and Artiste ID card. They asked to check my phone but I refused, I told them I just met their colleagues at Meiran and I was already getting frustrated with the way and manner they were stopping me for no reason, not like I was dressed shabily.
.
They asked me to get into their bus but I refused, suddenly a struggle ensued causing another scene again. I kept struggling with 2 of the SARS guys until their boss who’s well built and very masculine gave me series of slaps and blows before I obliged.

.
Meanwhile onlookers were just watching without anyone coming to my rescue. While in the bus, their boss said I injured him while struggling with them and for that I was going to pay for letting him bleed.
That’s how I was turned into a punching bag by this. All this was happening while their bus driver who’s actually a local bus commuter driver was driving. After about an hour I was already thinking they were kidnappers due to the lonely areas we’ve been plying.
.
When he was done checking my phone without seeing nothing incriminating, he was like so I’m I a Yahoo Boy I said No. He then told the bus driver to stop at a Govt primary school field where touts do come to smoke Marijuana.
.
He then treathened to shoot me and dump my body at the bush saying nothing will happen. They said so because I’m a Corper that I think I can struggle with them. That they don’t know who is giving us useless orientation.
.
I was later uncuffed. Before I alighted from their bus, I was able to write down the bus number since I couldn’t get their identity. (SMK05X6, its a mini 7 seater bus. I’m traumatized and I only hope the NPF will investigate and bring this men to justice. I give UP on this country.”
